They do this so that they can get information from you that will help them better market to you. Other people or groups do this for far more sinister reasons. They may want to steal sensitive information such as credit card information, financial account numbers and your social security number. Some websites will automatically attempt to download spyware when you visit their website.

When you use the internet, you leave a foot print. Other sites can see your IP address, what sites you have visited and even where you live. One way to avoid this and conversely, surf the internet without worrying about whether or not your personal information gets out, is to use an anonymous proxy server. These allow you to prevent your browser from directly connecting to other websites. The proxy will be in contact with the website and not your browser. Consequently, the sites that you visit, will pick up the IP address of the proxy and not your own. There you have it, one great tip to help you learn how to surf anonymously.
